Preconstruction Engineer                              FLSA Status: Exempt

 

Reports To: Preconstruction Manager

Primary Purpose:

Assists Preconstruction Manager with a variety of project development related functions, including project designs and budgets, from inception through the preconstruction phase, and continues to act as a resource throughout the project, for designated regional division. 

   

Principal Duties and Accountabilities:   

Design / Engineering:

  • Assist in conceptually finishing the design on incomplete decision documents.
  • Review of design documents for evaluation of project, cost impact, and schedule impact.
  • Review engineering calculations by the design engineer.
  • Assist in performing life cycle cost analysis of systems and options to generate desirable outcomes for potential clients.
  • Provide support with the generation of schematic drawings of systems for consultation.
  • Support Preconstruction Manager in overseeing the design progress on design-assist and design-build projects in terms of scope control, schedule impact and coordination.
  • Serve as a resource for Project Managers and Field personnel on design issues.
  • Research solutions to engineering applications both internally and externally.

 

Estimating:

  • Assist with generating budget estimates along with scope definition from incomplete design information.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of a preliminary estimating method, format and process that meets our preliminary estimating goals.
  • Update preliminary estimates until final design is complete.
  • Generate and maintain database of estimating information from past projects.

 

Critical Path Schedule Items:

  • Develop preliminary mechanical project schedules, soliciting input from the Preconstruction Manager.
  • Assist the Project Manager for updates to the project schedule until preconstruction ends.


Marketing:

  • Develop and foster effective relationships with clients who possess decision making authority.
  • Take support role in marketing of design-assist and design-build projects as coordinated with regional leadership.
  • Participate in the development of marketing materials that will aid in business development.

 

Job Scope: 

Scope of work may vary, from working on one large project, to several smaller size projects.

 

Management Responsibility:  

  X     Individual Contributor – no subordinates.

 

Education: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Science, or Architectural Engineering preferred.
  • Equivalent technical training and related experience will be considered.      

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years technical or administrative experience in HVAC, piping, and plumbing at a commercial, industrial, or institutional level.

Physical and/or travel demands:  

  • Infrequent travel may be required.
